Kate Middleton is back home after nearly two weeks in the hospital, where she was recovering from abdominal surgery. In a statement on Monday, Kensington Palace said Middleton “is making good progress.”
Earlier this month, the palace announced that Middleton was recuperating from a “planned abdominal surgery” at a private hospital in London. The Princess of Wales had apparently been admitted a day earlier and was expected to remain at the hospital for 10 to 14 days.
Though the Palace didn’t provide details about why Middleton needed surgery or what kind of operation she underwent, it did say the procedure was “successful”: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.” NBC reported that Middleton’s office at Kensington Palace said her condition is noncancerous.
The palace noted that Middleton, whose last public appearance was at a Christmas Day service near Sandringham, is not likely to participate in any public events until Easter as she recovers at home. They added that they will provide updates on Middleton’s recovery “when there is significant new information to share.”
Hours after Middleton’s condition was announced, Buckingham Palace said that King Charles would also be admitted to the hospital to have a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate the following week. Per the palace, his condition was benign. According to Reuters, the king was “keen” to share details about his health because he hoped other men would be encouraged to get checked. Like Middleton, the king is taking a break from public events to recover.
Monday’s statement about Middleton’s return home included a thank-you to the hospital’s nursing staff and royal fans. “The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world,” it said.
