I may live in California, but I take my outerwear seriously. Every year, I invest in one coat or jacket that will take me through the season. Two years ago, it was a quilted liner jacket. Last year, it was an oversized leather bomber jacket. This year, my pick is the Theory Relaxed Trench Coat.
With the draped hang of a trench and the polished look of a double-breasted coat, it’s both relaxed and refined, making the coat suitable for a wide range of outfits and occasions. Plus, the camel hue is the perfect complement to neutrals and autumnal shades alike. In other words, it’s a piece that goes with everything. I’ve reached for it three times in the past week alone to top a variety of casual and dressy looks, and have plans to wear it with countless outfits to come this season and beyond. In fact, I’m already envisioning it atop a tomato red cashmere sweater or burgundy mini dress. The versatility is endless.
For a Meeting
As someone who works predominantly from home, I love getting the chance to get out of my loungewear and wear those more tailored pieces in my wardrobe whenever I have a work event. What I love most about this coat is its relaxed drape, so I wanted to match that elevated ease with these soft flannel trousers. Mesh flats and an oversized clutch bring a bit of on-trend playfulness to the look.

For a Weekend Excursion
My partner and I prefer day dates rather than evening ones, so we plan a lot of weekend outings, like museum visits, antique shopping, or wine tasting. On this particular day, I knew I needed to dress warmly since we would be walking along the water in San Francisco after checking out a local arts fair. The coat is made from 90 percent wool and 10 percent cashmere, so it brings the warmth, but without any of the weight; it doesn’t feel like a burdensome outer layer. I love the look of camel and denim together, so decided to go for a casual denim-on-denim pairing, with the coat acting as the luxe finishing touch to elevate the look.

For a Dinner Date
Long skirts and dresses with long coats is an outfit combination I rely on often since I find it elongating for my petite frame. This coat hits a little below mid-shin on me, which is perfect. For a dinner out with friends, I paired the coat with a leather trouser skirt. Between the wool, leather, and croc boots, I like the mix of textures happening in this look. The chunky silver accents bring the edge for nighttime.
