Our checklist for the perfect sweater isn’t long: It needs to be warm, it should feel soft, and it has to be easy to wear. The issue is that ticking off all three requirements is harder than it should be. That’s why when we find one that does, we wear it nonstop — and then rave about it online.
This season, we’ve found not one, but two sweaters worth recommending, both from Theory: The Cable Knit Sweater and the Crewneck Cardigan. With their cashmere fabrication, both sweaters easily check off “warm and soft.” As for “easy to wear?” See for yourself the multiple ways we’re styling them for fall. The only issue we have now is not wanting to wear anything else.
The Wool-Cashmere Cable Knit

Why Aviel loves it: “There’s nothing more classic than a creamy cable knit sweater. I love that this one has a cropped, boxy cut that feels a bit more modern than your typical stitched cable. And, since this one is a wool-cashmere blend, it’s ridiculously soft and cozy. My go-to formula with an off-white sweater is to embrace the monochromatic look with white or cream denim. I like to add a touch of color with an accessory, like this silk scarf I picked up in Greece or statement earrings. If the temp dips at night, I will typically reach for an oversized puffer jacket (this one from Theory is my current fave).”
On Aviel: B Sides Slim Lasso Jean Clair Rinse, $385; Vagabond Hedda Boots, $200; Vintage Hermes Silk Scarf, $225; Velvet Canyon Mannequin Sunglasses, $235
Why Stephanie loves it: “During fall and winter, you can pretty much catch me wearing a chunky knit daily. This one is particularly easy to reach for since it feels warm and looks luxurious, but I actually like it most for its length. The slightly cropped cut means it hits at just the right spot to pair with jeans or trousers without the need to tuck. However, if you do want to tuck it in, it still looks sleek and lies flat since there’s not a lot of bulk to contend with. After wearing it (untucked) during the day with cream sweatpants, I challenged myself to dress it up (tucked) for a dinner out — a sheer silk skirt, burgundy leather clutch, and chunky bangle all bring a contemporary edge to the timeless look of the sweater.”
On Stephanie: NakedCashmere Marissa Silk Organza Midi Skirt, $225; Neous Sabik Slingback Shoes, $650; Flattered Cissi Clutch Bag, $375; Anna Rossi Jewellery Illusion Bangle, $54
The Cashmere Cardigan

Why Stephanie loves it: “A classic crewneck cardigan is something that’s been missing in my closet, which is surprising considering just how versatile it is. The cashmere is thin and lightweight, making it the perfect layering piece to be worn over tanks and tees and under coats and jackets. The gray is also the ideal neutral to mix and match with the rest of my wardrobe. I styled it simply with wide-leg cargo pants and boots to meet up with my parents for dinner, but have also worn it with jeans and a barn jacket as well as buttoned-up as a top with a slip skirt and a brown suede shacket.”
On Stephanie: The Great The Little Tee, $95; Theory Wide-Leg Cargo Pant, $345; Khaite Arizona Boot, $990; AGMES Large Astrid Cuff, $560
Why Aviel loves it: “I can’t tell you how long I’ve been searching for a slim, cropped cardigan with a crew neck. Finally, the combo of these three elements has come together in this perfect cashmere cardi. The fit, the cut, and the colorways (it also comes in black and camel) check all my boxes. It’s also lightweight enough that it doesn’t bunch up under a fitted jacket like this gorgeous Rouje suede trench (which is sadly sold out, but the cardigan would also look great under this warmer shearling jacket). For fall, I like to pair all of the above with a pair of sumptuously silky pants, walkable loafers, and a sweet shoulder bag.”
On Aviel: Rouje Firmin Jacket, $950; Comme Si La Boxer Alta Silk, $375; Maslo Co. Collette Earring, $158; ATP Atelier Airola Nappa Loafers, $590; Freja Caroline Bag, $258
