PSA: Do Not Eat Fruit You Find on the Street

Alicia Silverstone is making headlines for being airheaded, but I’m going to be strong and not make a Clueless joke. Here’s what’s going on: Silverstone posted a TikTok on Monday in which she asked her followers to help her identify a piece of fruit she had just taken a bite of. The catch is that she wasn’t in a restaurant or a farmers’ market — she was on the street in London, and the berry (?) that confused her was growing in a stranger’s garden.

What the heck is this!? I’m in England and can’t figure it out. 🤔

“I just bit into it because it was on the street,” Silverstone said. Great start. The actress then determined it was not a tomato because of the leaves, which gave way to an incredible reveal: The plant is behind a gate on private property. “If I bite it — I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this — it’s almost like a pepper,” she mused. It turns out that her instinct was correct; you are not supposed to eat that.

People in the comments were quick to tell the actress that what she was eating was a Jerusalem cherry, a member of the nightshade family that is mildly poisonous. They also wanted her to know that she had poor manners. “Girl! berries are either great or freaking poisonous! Don’t eat rando bush-things,” wrote one commenter. “Even if it was a tomato, it’s on someone’s private front garden, you can’t just reach through their gate and pick their plants,” wrote another.

Silverstone has not posted since, but probably not because the berry took her out. If anything, she might be experiencing some gastrointestinal discomfort as a result of her cluelessness. Ooh, I tried so hard, but did you really think I wasn’t going to say it? As if!
