I sleep with a fan on in the dead of winter. It doesn’t matter if it feels like the Arctic tundra outside, I’ll still wake up from a dead sleep drenched in sweat, wondering if I had been training for a marathon in my dreams. And it’ll only get worse as I approach perimenopause, which can increase hot flashes and sweating, especially at night.

With a husband who runs hot (seriously, it feels like I’m sleeping next to Jacob Black) and two cats who love to cuddle, a good night’s sleep for me is dependent on a million and one little details. From cool-to-the-touch PJs that help regulate my body temperature and moisture-wicking sheets to luxury cooling mattress toppers and a workhorse fan, I’ve curated my must-have sleeping essentials (thanks to years of trial and error) below. Plus, I even reached out to other hot sleepers to see what they use to keep them sweat-free throughout the night (even in the middle of summer).

Best Mattresses for Hot Sleepers

The Splurge-Worthy One

Eight Sleep Pod 4 - Queen
$2,599
$2,599

Sizes: Full, Queen, King, Cali King

Touted as the ultimate sleep system, this mattress is an investment in your sleep cycle. The high-tech cover, which uses sensors to monitor heart rate and breathing, wraps around the mattress and helps cool you as low as 55 degrees. New York writer Ella Cerón, author of Viva Lola Espinoza, says she once tested this as an editor at a previous job and notes it’s a great help if you’re a human furnace when you sleep. “The Eight Sleep actively cools the mattress itself, so I’m cold from below and not just cold in my room.”

The Editor-Loved One

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress - Queen
$1,036
$1,036

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cali King

Tested by the Strategist editors, this foam mattress was rated as the Best Cooling in 2024. Not only does it feature breathable foam technology, it includes a cover with cooling technology to keep you comfortable all night long.

The Investment Piece

One of the most popular cooling mattresses on the market, Nectar Luxe was designed with comfort in mind. It features double the cooling fibers of the brand’s standard mattress and is topped with a cooling cover to wick away sweat while you sleep.

Saatva Classic Mattress - Queen

There’s a reason this award-winning mattress has such a loyal following. Crafted with hypoallergenic and organic cotton (read: material that helps keep you cool), this mattress utilizes a unique dual-coil design to provide ample airflow throughout the night.

Best Pajamas for Hot Sleepers

The Ones That Feel Luxe

I’ve been obsessed with these Kitty and Vibe pajamas since they arrived in my mailbox a few years ago. Not only do they feel like silk against your body, they’re super-lightweight and surprisingly comfortable, and they feature moisture-wicking technology. I have the matching shorts, and I prefer to size up in these so they’re extra cozy.

The Matching Set

One person I spoke to, who prefers to stay anonymous, says they swear by Soma’s Cool Night PJs: “The material is just really light, but it’s breathable and doesn’t stick if I inevitably sweat to death.” This particular set comes in short sleeves and is cool to the touch.

The Washable Silk Set

If you want to invest in a solid set of pajamas as a hot sleeper, Erika O. recommends you look into Lunya’s set. “It’s changed my sleep,” she tells the Cut. “It’s expensive, but the quality is really good (even after washes), and the brand offers a better range of plus sizes than most.”

.

Best Fans for Hot Sleepers

The High-Tech Air Purifier

Remember that fan I was raving about earlier? This is the very one that keeps me cool during heat waves and beyond. I’ve had an older model for half a decade now, and it’s still working like new. Not only does it purify the air in your home (a must if you have pets!), but it connects to an app so you can monitor air-quality levels, adjust the speed and rotation, and turn it off and on remotely. It’s truly the best thing to ever happen to my sleep schedule.

The Ultraquiet Standing Fan

For two summers, I lived in a historic NYC building that wasn’t allowed to have air conditioning installed. Because I refused to melt in my bed each night, I relied on my Rowenta pedestal fan, which featured five speeds and impressive power. To this day, I still regret selling it on Facebook Marketplace — it is one of my all-time favorite fans for hot sleepers, and I’ll recommend it a million times over.

A More Affordable Alternative

Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with tower fans, but this one from Lasko is a budget-friendly option for hot sleepers who need to keep their room cool throughout the night. Not only does this feature three different speeds (each of which is surprisingly quiet), it has a timer that you can program to shut the fan off if you don’t want it running all night.

.

Best ACs for Hot Sleepers

The Smart One

At just shy of $500, this 8,000-BTU window AC packs a powerful punch. Not only does it come in six colors, it is app controlled and can even be connected to Google Home and Amazon Alexa. “It’s really aesthetic,” says Nishka D., who owns the unit. “It cools small spaces super-quickly and can be installed yourself.” It’s a great option for people who want to keep cool all night long without the hassle of getting out of bed to turn the unit on.

The One for Small Spaces

Hot sleepers rave about this popular AC unit thanks to its app-controlled ease and simplicity to install. Hailey A. says it only took her five minutes to get this situated in her home: “It barely makes any noise, and I can control it from my phone to set a time or turn it on before I get into my apartment.” One user I spoke to did say that this AC might not be the best for larger rooms, even at the higher-end BTU.

The Quiet One

If you’re a hot sleeper who needs a freezing-cold room and complete silence to fall asleep, this might be the AC for you. The unit’s unique U-shaped design claims to help block noise, operating at a reported 32 dBA (which is basically how quiet a library is). “It’s insanely quiet. Like ‘Is this thing on?’ quiet sometimes,” says Elise P., who owns a Midea. App controlled with different presets (like pet mode and baby mode!), you can turn this unit on and off remotely. “Every single person in my friend group got it within the past year. Not a bit of buyer’s remorse among them,” she adds.

Best Comforters and Duvet Covers for Hot Sleepers

The One You’ll Wish You Bought Sooner

Buffy Breeze Comforter
From $196
From $196

Designed to help you get better sleep, this award-winning comforter is one of those everyday—er, every night—essentials you’ll wish you’d bought years ago. Crafted with Lyocell fiber fill, this comforter helps regulate your body temp to let you sleep more deeply. I’ve been using mine for a few weeks and can already see a difference in my temperature as I sleep.

The One That’s Like Magic

Rest Evercool® Cooling Comforter
From $159
From $159

The award-winning Evercool Cooling Comforter is a triple threat for hot sleepers everywhere. It’s cool to the touch, ultrasoft, and moisture wicking. If you’re one of those people who constantly wakes up in a pool of sweat, you might want to consider this high-tech option. “The Rest comforter is magic; it keeps you warm without being too warm,” says Tricia C. “I sleep with my room at 65 degrees and it keeps me insulated from my self-imposed chilly air while not making me overheated.”

The NASA-Approved Option

Designed with NASA-engineered technology, this lightweight comforter was designed to keep you cool throughout the night. It’s crafted with a specialized fiberfill and low thread count to increase breathability and prevent heat buildup, according to the company’s site.

Best Pillows for Hot Sleepers

The Customizable One

This is another solid investment piece for hot sleepers who want a cool-to-the-touch pillow that won’t make them feel like an inferno in the middle of the night. Featuring a heat-wicking inner liner and a specialized cooling gel-memory foam interior, this pillow helps increase airflow and decrease the number of nightly hot flashes. “It’s very noticeably cool when you first lie on it and helps me fall asleep immediately,” says Logan L. “And you can adjust the filling to make it higher and firmer based on what you prefer.”

The Tried-and-True Option

From $99

Tempur-Pedic has been a staple in the bedding industry for decades, so it’s no surprise that hot sleepers rave about its Dual Cooling Pillow, which features a thin layer of cooling gel on both sides. One woman I spoke to says she got this pillow for her husband to help keep him cool at night since he’s a hot sleeper and she’s a cold sleeper who can’t have the AC blasting through the night.

.

Best Sheets for Hot Sleepers

The Set Everyone Loves

From $143

There’s a reason Brooklinen’s Classic Percale sheets are a best seller. Not only are they soft to the touch, they come in tons of different colors and patterns and help keep you cool throughout the night. While these aren’t the best if you want moisture-wicking qualities, I have owned multiple sets of these sheets for years and always get compliments on them. It definitely helps that they look and feel like something you’d find in a luxury resort. I also appreciate that they provide a good amount of breathability without being superthin.

The Organic Option

From $90

One hot sleeper told me she swears by Quince’s bamboo sheets, which were designed to help you regulate your temperature while you sleep. They also happen to be a fraction of the price compared to other brands made with similar materials. “These sheets are supersoft and silky, and I never wake up hot when we have them on,” says Daniela R.

The Pet-Friendly Ones

Dog owner Kate B. says cooling sheets she’s used in the past were too thin to protect against her dogs’ nails and quickly ripped. She’s since switched to Baloo linen sheets, which she says are thicker and therefore sturdier than others she’s tried: “They’re so soft and cool to the touch; I feel very luxurious getting into them every night.”
