Kendall Jenner Has Had Some ‘Really Dark Nights’ As a Model

To some, Kendall Jenner is the second-youngest of the KarJenner brood. To me and my colleagues at the Cut, she is the woman who went barefoot at the Louvre that one time. And to others still, she is a supermodel who has blessed the runways of Chanel, Givenchy, and Marc Jacobs. But on Thursday’s episode of the Anything Goes podcast, Jenner told host (and fellow model-influencer hybrid) Emma Chamberlain that the modeling industry certainly has its downsides, even when you’ve grown up very rich and very famous.

While Jenner acknowledged she has been “extremely fortunate” in her career and has mostly had a “beautiful experience” wearing garments like archival 1999 Givenchy, the 28-year-old admitted to feeling “overworked” and having to deal with “cutthroat” individuals from time to time. “People in the industry can be really tough or blunt or brutal,” she said, noting instances when she had been passed over for a job that left her feeling like she’s “not enough.” Jenner also nodded to the many lonely nights spent away from family, sometimes traveling alone as a teenager for up to three months at a time in foreign countries. “It is very lonely … I’ve had really dark nights hysterically crying myself to sleep,” she said.

Of course, Jenner is hardly the first to speak up about subpar working conditions in the industry, which has long been criticized for predatory practices, particularly among its young female workforce. Luckily for her, she finds water to be a helpful balm and can usually shake off the anxiety with a dip in the bath. All better!
