Being a celebrity dog seems like a great gig. It’s all the perks of fame with none of the gruntwork: You get dressed in couture and ferried around to glamorous A-list events, but you never have to check your email or read bad press. Days after Demi Moore’s silly, tongue-lolling Chihuahua, Pilaf, got her own Vogue cover, Kim Kardashian’s Pomeranian, Sushi, made a rare public appearance at the Ritz-Carlton on the way to the Polo Bar with Kim and North West.
Though Sushi has appeared on the Skims founder’s Instagram in flashy outfits, like a fluffy hot-pink sweater and an actual sushi costume, the pooch opted for an au naturel look, its fur matching Kim’s camel-colored pants. Sushi’s two siblings, Saké and Soba/Soy Sauce, seem to have remained at home. (In 2019, when Kim announced the two dogs’ adoption on Instagram, North was still deciding on names; the winner still hasn’t been confirmed.)
A onetime dog walker for Madonna, Kim has experience with pets, though she’s faced some trouble with her own. Sushi is allegedly such a barker that Kim once attempted to swap Sushi with Kourtney Kardashian-Barker’s pup, Honey, and called in a celebrity dog whisperer for disciplining assistance. Sushi and Sake were the subject of controversy after Kim posted an Instagram story in 2022 suggesting they were living in her garage with a Christmas tree and stockings. “Knowing that Kim Kardashian is anti-fur and mostly vegan, we are hoping hard that she does not relegate her dogs to life in a garage,” said the senior vice-president of PETA, weighing in. Maybe now that Sushi has has been papped, she’ll be upgraded to her own in-mansion bedroom?
