Malia Obama made her directorial debut earlier this year at Sundance, and she seems to be growing into the role just fine. The 26-year-old former first daughter walked the red carpet at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, where she screened her short film, The Heart, and found time for a little fashion moment.
Where Malia opted for more of a behind-the-scenes filmmaker look at Sundance, she went all out for her red-carpet outfit in France, wearing a plaid Vivienne Westwood bodice, asymmetric skirt, and chunky boots.
Malia, who’s credited without her last name on the 18-minute film, has been working in the entertainment industry alongside her sister for almost a decade now — she famously interned for HBO’s Girls when she was 17 and worked as a writer for Donald Glover’s show Swarm. (Glover’s production company, Gilga, developed The Heart.)
Speaking to a reporter on the carpet, Malia said she felt “a little bit terrified but mostly excited.” Of her outfit, she said, “Vivienne Westwood. Queen. I don’t know much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it.”
