It’s high time for a tell-all from Martha Stewart — chef, businesswoman, thirst-trapper extraordinaire, and the woman who knows all of Snoop Dogg’s secrets. On Thursday, the trailer for Martha, the R.J. Cutler–directed Netflix documentary about her life and career, came out, promising insights galore from the first female self-made billionaire in American history (and also, per the film, “the original influencer”). One nugget that has already caught a lot of people’s attention: the revelation that Stewart cheated on her first husband, publisher Andrew Stewart.
“Young women, listen to my advice: If you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of shit. Get out of that marriage,” Stewart says in one clip from the trailer, prompting a producer to push back and ask if she herself had an affair “early on” in her marriage to Andy. “Yeah, but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that,” Stewart responds.
Martha and Andy got married in 1961, when he was a student at Yale Law School and she was doing fashion modeling to help pay for a degree at Barnard College. They welcomed one daughter together, Alexis, and were together until 1990. The couple was said to have had a rocky marriage that may or may not have included infidelity — an unauthorized 1997 biography by Jerry Oppenheimer claimed both of them cheated. Three years after their divorce, in 1993, Andy married Stewart’s former assistant, Robyn Fairclough, who was 21 years younger than him. They eventually divorced, too, and Andy is now married to a woman named Shyla who also works in publishing. They have five children together.
Martha hits Netflix October 30, and hopefully Stewart will share at least a little more about what went down. See you then!
