Sorry if you were trying to avoid the news, but Donald Trump was officially sworn in today. How is Melania Trump feeling about her husband’s big return to power? It’s hard to say, since she’s wearing a hat that obscures her face almost entirely.
The hat, a navy and white wide-brim number designed by Eric Javits, might look normal enough off of Melania’s head — but the way she has decided to wear it resembles an advanced piece of spycraft. In most photos of the once-again First Lady from the day, her eyes have disappeared entirely under its shadow. She kept the hat on even after heading inside the Capitol Rotunda, where Trump visibly struggled to maneuver around its massive brim to kiss her on the cheek while making his big entrance, and throughout the full inauguration ceremony.
Between her oversize sunglasses and the Pierpaolo Piccioli–era Valentino jumbo white collar she wore to Jimmy Carter’s funeral, the only consistent thing about Melania’s style lately is its inscrutability. At least today she wasn’t the only Trump woman wearing a bold hat. Ivanka Trump also showed up in a statement headpiece — but hers was one she could wear through an airport-security checkpoint.
