It’s that time in an election year where the celebs start reminding us to register to vote. Some of them, like Taylor Swift, are capable of sending hundreds of thousands of people to a voter-registration site. I wonder about the others. For example, do you think any unregistered voter was persuaded to get their shit together because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reminded them? What if it were the people who work for Harry and Meghan doing the reminding?
In honor of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, employees at the couple’s Archewell Foundation got together to write personalized letters to unregistered voters encouraging them to register. Whether Harry and Meghan were part of the letter-writing campaign remains unknown (although they weren’t in the photo carousel). Their tacit endorsement of the concept of voting comes through in a statement on their website, though.
“Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities,” the statement reads. “At the Archewell Foundation, we recognize that civic engagement, no matter one’s political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world.”
It’s kind of funny that a literal prince who can’t vote in a U.S. election is saying this, but I guess his heart is in the right place. Markle has been outspoken about voting in the past. In the 2020 election, she told Marie Claire, “I know what it’s like to have a voice, and also what it’s like to feel voiceless. I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And that opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all of our voices heard.”
Now, a real move would be for them to endorse a candidate. Would they ever? No, probably not. Besides, Markle seems really busy being a “dolphin investor” and fledgling jam entrepreneur, and Harry … I think he has a show about polo? For Netflix? They’ve got a lot going on, trust me.
