Swinging Sixties icon Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78. A staple of London’s rock ’n’ roll scene and the former girlfriend of Mick Jagger, the British singer and actress passed on Thursday, a spokesperson confirmed to People. A cause of death has not yet been released.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” a statement read. “Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”
Faithfull rocketed onto the music scene in 1964, when Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham discovered her at a party. The following year, she entered into a high-profile relationship with Jagger that lasted four years, during which she was rumored to have inspired the Stones hits “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Wild Horses.” Faithfull also had her own successful music career, releasing a self-titled debut album in 1965 alongside the hit single “Come and Stay With Me.” She went on to act in films such as The Girl on a Motorcycle and Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, and collaborated with directors including Jean-Luc Godard.
Here’s how celebrities, rock legends, and former lovers are honoring Faithfull’s legacy.
