When Are The 2023 Emmys?

The 2023 Emmys are almost here. And yes, 2023: Last summer, as the Writer’s Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strike for better pay and working conditions wore on, it became clear that the Emmy Awards wouldn’t take place during their usual September slot. With writers and actors — who are essential to the broadcast — picketing, Fox and the Academy had no choice but to postpone the show for the first time since 9/11.

Now, with the strikes resolved and tv programming largely back on schedule, the 75th broadcast is set to air this Monday (which, coincidentally, is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day). Here’s what to expect.

When are the Emmys?

The 2023 Emmys will take place on Monday, January 15 at the Peacock Theater in L.A with Anthony Anderson as the host. “When Fox asked me to host this historic telecast, I was over the moon that Taylor Swift was unavailable,” he joked in December. “Now I can’t wait to be part of the biggest night in television.”

Who’s nominated for Emmy Awards?

This might get a little confusing. The awards will honor prime time programs that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023 — meaning shows that were on in 2022 will be getting awards in 2024. Succession’s final season, for example, which aired in the spring of 2023, is up for 27 awards. Meanwhile, The Bear is nominated for its first season, which premiered in June 2022 (and not its most recent season, which aired in 2023.)

With 23 nominations, it’s safe to assume The White Lotus’s season 2 cast will be a big presence — and maybe Meghann Fahy and Leo Woodall bless us and walk the red carpet together. Other fan favorites, like Jenna Ortega, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Ali Wong are up for awards for Wednesday, Abbott Elementary and Beef, respectively.

How can I watch the Emmys?

The ceremony will air on Fox on Monday, January 15 at at 8 p.m. ET. (The broadcast rights rotate between the four major networks.) If you miss them live, the show will be on Hulu on Tuesday. The Creative Arts Emmys, which honor technical and artistic achievement in television and celebrate reality, animated, and documentary TV, took place over the weekend. You can see all of the winners here.

Will the 2024 Emmys still happen in September?

It’s not yet clear when the 2024 broadcast will air, though Variety reports that the eligibility calendar for shows that air between June 2023 and May 2024 won’t change. If the academy follows the Olympics way of doing things, we’ll have another Emmy broadcast in September.
