At the Maison Margiela show in the Grand Palais today, John Galliano skipped last season’s candy-floss bouffants in favor of a more casual look — though, this being Margiela (and Galliano) there was still green lipstick to be seen. The designer dubbed the collection “raw core,” although what that means (and how it relates to normcore) was still unclear.

Galliano piled on the eccentric details, like exaggerated sleeves that turned into muffs.

And rows of bangles, liberally stacked Nancy Cunard–style.

With his typical affection for all things rococo, he translated a gilt-edged picture frame as a belt buckle.

This sparkling bomber jacket seems like the biggest bid for street-style “It” item status. Can’t you just picture it on Caroline Issa?

Galliano presented his takes on two classic shoe silhouettes: the lug-soled boot and the high top.

As he did last season, the designer heavily emphasized bags, including this oversize one with an abstract fork print.

Even the more classic staples, like a military overcoat, were enlivened with quirky patches that made them feel like vintage finds.

The standout: these Peggy Guggenheim–worthy earrings, which were shaped like Matisse cutouts.
