Starting New Year’s Day, three states are now proudly cruelty-free. California, Nevada, and Illinois officially banned the sale of beauty products tested on animals.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, and Sara Amundson, president of Humane Society Legislative Fund, said: “With thousands of ingredients having a history of safe use and an increasing number of non-animal test methods available to provide data more relevant to humans, often in less time and at a lower cost, companies can still create new and innovative cosmetics without any additional animal testing.”

A nationwide ban on animal testing is yet to come, with the more encompassing Humane Cosmetics Act, currently with Congress. This act would effectively end all animal testing for both beauty products and ingredients. It would also prohibit any cosmetics tested on animals anywhere in the world from being imported. Here’s to a better world for all animals, whether they be baby rhinos, trash pandas, lower-ranking whales, or feral hogs.
