After Elon Musk issued a “Sieg Heil”–like salute on Inauguration Day, Grimes made clear that she would like nothing to do with her ex nor his apparent embrace of fascism. On Tuesday, the singer’s followers demanded she address Musk’s gesture, which closely resembled the fascist salute used by Adolf Hitler and other authoritarians. Grimes, whose legal name is Claire Boucher, dated the billionaire from 2018 to 2021, and they share three eccentrically named children. When followers realized Grimes had not yet addressed her ex’s dog whistle to neo-Nazis, they began to demand answers.
“I’m happy to denounce Nazi-ism — and the far alt right. Would that help clear things up?” she replied on X Wednesday. “I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head. But if there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record strait [sic] in a meaningful way.”
“While I deeply respect your concern — it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now,” she added. “I am not him. I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting.”
Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time Grimes has expressed this sentiment. In the midst of the former couple’s legal battle in November, the 36-year-old called Musk “unrecognizable” from the man she used to know. But bro-ing out with Trump and flirting with Nazi-ism? That’s something else entirely.
