Guests have already started filtering in to the 2024 Met Gala, but before we can judge their outfits, we must weigh in on what the museum’s steps are wearing. With the evening’s first arrivals has come a big reveal of the décor outside the venue, and I have to say: That is one weird carpet.
The night’s “Garden of Time” theme appears to have been interpreted pretty literally along the steps, where an off-white expanse of fabric that looks like it was airbrushed with seafoam-green splotches has been unfurled. Unfortunately for everyone attending, it is alarmingly busy, not to mention unpleasant to behold.
To me, this carpet looks like a T-shirt I tie-dyed at summer camp. It may remind you of something else — a petri dish filled with bacteria, perhaps, or a can of Mountain Dew — but what it does not look like is a flattering background for the evening’s outfits. At an event where many guests are bound to incorporate leaves, flowers, trees, and other natural elements into their outfits, a patterned green background seems ill-advised at best. Already, the topiaries lining the steps have swallowed up at least one guest’s outfit — here is poor Rachel Smith, virtually disappearing into the foliage behind her:
Let’s just hope no one was planning to wear camo?
